It's innate, I think. Fear of "the other." I always think of Yoda's wise words "Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering." Also in my experience, it's a generational thing. The Ani-parents have attitudes that are complete rubbish, and I call them on it when I hear anything, but I guess we live in more enlightened times.
