I am so very whitebread lol

The first of my DNA tests are done. Oddly, I didn't get an email and it's not showing matches so it must still be processing but there is a map that according to their FAQ gives me a rough combination of 50% from each parent. How not a shock that I'm 100% European lol

One thing that I am surprised about is that the percentage of British Isles is so low since most of my work on fleshing out Dad's side shows that most of the ancestors go back to the UK. I'm interested in the 7% Sothern Europe and WOW at 26% Scandinavian with another 5% in Finland and Northern SIberia?

Hopefully ancestry.com comes through with their testing so I can compare the two.

Did all your British ancestors come from either the north or the east?

When I zoom in to the map, it looks definitely more north

Northern Britain is likely to get you a higher Scandinavian makeup cause of the Viking control of the north of Britain before the 10th century, whereas obviously the "English" is also really not native, so being "English" genetically gives you western and central continental Europe DNA not British.

Also aren't you British royalty? And your surname is French? So your arrival on British soil is likely to be 1066 and probably be FrenchNorman and FrenchNorman is basically Scandinavian, at which point in 1066 your lot will have married the existing aristocracy in England, who are very Scandi themselves. British royalty is never really ethnic originally British, the Royal households of Britain have a tendency to be Nordic hostile takeovers.

I have traced the relation to Catherine Howard and some other fun relations. Some other names I've come across are FitzRandolph, Horton (that's my Dad's middle name and Grandmother's maiden name), McCullough, and interestingly, O'Hara even though my family blob barely nicks Ireland lol

Mom's side is the mystery that I've been looking to solve. She didn't know her Dad had German roots and I found those and my Great great grandmother is Czech and seemed to move around the US kind of oddly which made me wonder about possible Roma roots.

I didn't build my tree much on the FamilyTreeDNA site so I'm wondering if I add folks, if I'll start to link to actual live people.

That's a good idea! I did that in the hope of having living long lost cousins living in exotic places I could go and stay with on holiday, but no they're all from rainy Britain or occasionally even more rainy Ireland and usually not that far from where I live now damnit.

Fascinating. Do the percentages have anything to do with how recently that DNA entered the bloodline? It will be interesting to see what Ancestry comes up with.

Not from what I've read. It's basically a snapshot of approximately 50% from each parent (but that can even vary since my percentages can even differ from my sister's!) and it drills back very far to your family's original origins.

If it were recent, I wonder how that would be since it takes a LONG time on most of my Dad's side before I even leave the U.S. There's one fourth great grandfather where I can't find where he was born and that's the youngest. The rest go back to 7th, 8th even 10th great grandparent before the parent is foreign-born.

Mom's side, who is the one I have had trouble tracing I've gotten stuck relatively early. I'm tempted to see if I can Mom to take a DNA test if I get one on sale again. I'd love to have both parents test to compare their percentages to mine

Very interesting. At least it's that mystery solved!
