Antoine's New Orleans

Dad called to ask me whether we ate at Antoine's on the one time we went to New Orleans (pre-Katrina). We hadn't, but I told him the reason why it was familiar to him is because I have a menu from a place in NO with a similar name - Arnaud's - that I found in an antique shop in Ohio and at the last place I live, I turned scans of it into a wall-long mural. It didn't come down from the wall in good enough shape to transport but I could have it made again sometime. He asked because there was this piece on CBS Sunday Morning

I wish we would have gone there since they clearly value their people and their customers. Maybe I'll get the chance sometime. For the record, we didn't go to Arnaud's either. I am wondering about the menu and prices for a place ther around the Civil War!

Makes me wonder - any of you have a place like this that you frequent? I do get along well and like to visit my local Ruthie's Bagels regularly. I'm FB friends with the owner even.

Well, one place shut down for us as well...some of the best 'fast' Chinese food in town. There for 20+ years and then gone - Wonton Express. But I also love Empress of China. It was taken over by new (and younger and nicer) management a couple of years ago. A lot about it has changed, but it is still excellent food. And we also have a fav Mexican place called El Caporal. I think there is three of them now, but our fav is still the original. Friendly and marvelous Mexican food. For pizza, we have Bearno's. They make actual pizza-pies and they are delicious, if a tad expensive. The original place is on Taylorsville Rd here, but they have something like 10 to 15 restaurants that have sprung up over the last decade or so.

It sort of reminds me of Taste, but on a larger scale. The building that houses the restaurant is from the 1800's. Inside it is very polished and modern, but outside still has an old feel for it. The owner has bought the hotel next door and offers a pretty attractive mid-week package. maybe one of these days, we can try it.

I love good Chinese. Do any of the places serve any non-Americanized stuff? This is the menu for one of my favorite nearby places

It's one of those chinese places with the cooked meats hanging up. I adore their congee. It's the simplest stuff but it's such comfort food.

I don't like NY style pizza all that much. I much rather Ohio-style thin crust but it's hard to find around here.

We will have to see what happens. I have all of my vacation (and then some) taken next year, so who knows when we will get there for it.

Mmm, I love a good soup. it can make or break a restaurant for me.

Both do...well, Wonton DID, I don't know if the place that replaced it does. From what I gather, the food isn't all that great. Meh.

Dude! SO COOL. Wish I had a restaurant like that around here, bit alas...no.

This is well done, really. It is smaller than most NY pizza's, but they are deeper dishes all the same. I do love some pizza on a cracker though. For that, I always go for Dominio's. Rare, but I will eat their pizza. :D

I saw that piece on Sunday too. I've been to NOLA many times and have yet to eat at Antoines. I do remember hearing about the personal waiters but had completely forgotten about it until seeing it Sunday morning. I would like to go there sometime though I have heard that when you go in if you aren't a local they seat you in a "tourist" section and the experience isn't quite the same. I also think they require jackets for men and since we usually travel casual when we are there, I bet it will be hard for us to ever eat there.

In Matawan, we frequented a pub, Maloney's, where the owner and a couple of the bartenders and wait staff knew us. We didn't always get them as our servers but the ones who knew us if they were working would stop by to say hi if they saw us. It was nice.

Damn, I wish I had a place like that. Except vegan, of course. New Orleans is on my travel bucket list.
