The Dad Update

My Bonne Maman advent calendar is fun. There are only a couple so far that haven't been my thing (like the grapefruit one). The one that really tickled my fancy was the cherry and pink peppercorn jam. If they sold it in a regular size jar, I'd totally get it. When I ordered, I got one for my coworker since she knew her husband would LOVE it and he told her to thank me again since he's having a great time with it. My IKEA advent calendar with the piece of chocolate per day is ok but they seem a lot sweeter this year.
Dad had a not so great day on Saturday with some tummy troubles again but he seemed to be better later that day. The next day, Sis and BIL picked him up and took him to their church (which he actually enjoyed since they don't seem to be the holy roller type). He went to lunch with them at Culver's and they also gave him some puzzle books and coloring books and colored pencils. He was kind of semi-grumpy on that at first but he's really embraced and enjoyed the coloring. He says it calms him like I told him it would and he likes it a lot and has even showed off what he's done to the staff (how utterly cute is that?). I told him that he didn't remember that he likes crafts so anytime they have group ones, he should totally get in on them. I reminded him about how back in the 80s, he made huge latch-hook rugs and crocheted quilts. I'm trying to think of who to get hold of there to see if any of the residents crochet since I think he'd love to relearn it. Next Thursday there's a "making picture frames for family" and I told him he should make one for Sis and BIL.
I also have to remind him about foods he likes. Before dinner he was all "meh" about what they were going to have so I had him read it to me and it was corn chowder. I enthused about it (because we both love it) and he was all OH! and went and had it and asked for more and they gave it to him. He even liked today's honey chicken and he doesn't normally like chicken. One of the others couldn't eat something they had so they gave it to Dad. Heh, good, FEED HIM ALL HE WANTS. The poor guy is way too skinny. The staff talked him into participating in the movement and meditation class last week and he liked that too and might do it again. I sent a few things to the facility for him which will probably arrived in different packages. One is a couple of packs of biscotti which he loves (also calories, yo). Another is a low-piece count puzzle that's for folks with dementia/memory issues which I thought was SO cute. I'm tempted to get one for myself since it's small. Also, I got him one of those kits where you color the plastic designs to become mandala suncatcher window clings. He has a huge window so I thought that would be fun and something to make the place look homey.
I hope things keep going well. He's had it rough. It would be nice if his son and two grandkids contacted him much but at least he has his daughters and son in law.
