but not necessarily her fault. I don't know how old your niece is, but she needs someone to keep her in line - does she do school online or is someone supposed to be keeping track? "Cause,of course, you are right! This is not preparation for real life.

She will be 17 in March and sure, she's musically talented but she needs to know more and at this point, she's old enough to KNOW that she needs to get off her ass. There's no other online schooling. Texas doesn't appear to check much of anything.

I had some hope that HCYO was some sort of academic thing, but apparently it is "Hill Country Youth Orchestra" which...matches everything else on the schedule.

Also, I have to laugh at the fact that NOTHING starts any earlier than 2pm on her weekdays - that's JUST LIKE ADULT LIFE!

Okay, so she will be prepared to be a musician who can calculate her pay and taxes and fight off muggers who try to steal her viola. It is a start.

I have no idea what paxico, HCYO, Kerrville, and the smudged thing that starts with B are. By any chance, something to do with biology, physical sciences, literature, social sciences, or foreign languages? Although I thin some of those subjects are not allowed to be taught in Texas.

HCYO is her orchestra. No clue about Paxico. Highly doubtful it’s anything academic.

I was hoping that she would be able to get a scholarship to come to school up here at Rutgers Mason Gross school of the arts but you need to at least have the basics and clearly she’s not gonna have that

I guess she will just be working the graveyard shift. And at the way she’s going it’ll be at a convenience store or gas station.

I'm unclear on how she is even going to get a high school diploma? Even with home schooling, don't you have to take the same state exams to get a diploma? Or is that not how the US works?

Or is the plan to just go straight to GED?

Looks like according to Texas law, the parent can just deem their kid graduated whenever they want.

I had heard at some point that the somehow "graduated" nephew wanted to go to college. Good for him but I doubt he'll do it since he's no more formally educated than she is.

And my brother has always been of the opinion that his oh so smart kids will be going to Ivy league schools. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA...oh shit...

I just looked that up earlier and not only that, the parent gets to decide when the kid is good enough to graduate and can sign the diploma

Academic qualities aren't the only way to get into the Ivy League. 95% of the kids I knew were smart and worked their arses off, but there was a minority who were dumb as goldfish and were there just to drink and screw who got in via the Daddy's Wallet route. All your brother has to do is donate $5,000,000 for something and she will be in as soon as his check clears. How do you think the 45th President of the US got in?

She would still have to take standardized tests (Math, Science, Social Studies, and Reasoning Through Language Arts) to get her GED, which is considered a high school diploma for college and job purposes.

This was her response which doesn't make much sense nor give me much comfort that she's being properly schooled "Some things well thrown in more random or on the road, math won’t actually take the whole hour blocked, we haven’t planned it all yet, etc"

With that response, how about getting some more GRAMMAR education in there, kid? Also, oh great, math won't take the whole hour when that's the ONLY academic subject you have scheduled? Sheesh.

Oh, my. I read the thread, and TX has not set standards... even AL has set standards for graduating. I used a computer program that covered all the classes the year I had to homeschool WT. We could have been lax but we chose not to. We even did an extra class watching ANDY GRIFFITH episodes and talking about it.
I just hope their intent is not to have her 'educated' enough to marry young. Someone who watched the documentaris about the Duggars and their church stuff said the girls learned math so they could measure ingredients for cooking. Fractions was good, learning advanced math was not .... I know.
What is sad for your niece is she doesn't know any different now but when she's out in the real world she'd going to be so unprepared and she'll see how undereducated she is in basics.

Her math is probably pretty decent level, at least, since I remember hearing as a little kid that she's good at it and because my brother is probably the one teaching her and he's a civil engineer that was a GA for a high level calculus class at Ohio State back when. But her reading skills aren't the greatest. Also, the brother has had his kids helping out with his jobs so at least that's some form of higher education. But she needs to get more of the structure if she's ever going to go anywhere in life.

Considering that she's told them that she's bi and she seems to be leaning more to lesbian from what I'm getting a vibe, they better be open to her finding a good WIFE. lol
