It boggles my mind with the number of people - mostly on FB - that keep insisting that people just need to shut up and calm down and respect Trump now that he's about to be president. It's not just Trump having his finger on the proverbial button that's the entire problem and they don't appear to get that. Republican president all set to appoint a gang of wackadoo sycophants to his cabinet, republican congress, republican house, soon to be a handpicked judge to add to the Supreme Court. Tell me, where are the checks and balances? Yes, there isn't an overwhelming majority in Congress, thankfully, but still, a lot of damage can be done in a short amount of time.
Meanwhile, I have friends legitimately freaking out because Congress is already chomping at the bit to pick apart the ACA and Trump and evil freaking Pence are poised to go after taking away LGBTQIA rights. One friend in particular I feel especially horribly for. She has life threatening health conditions and her ACA insurance and the elimination of pre-existing conditions is what's been keeping her going as well as a special work program for disabled people. If the job and the insurance are picked away bit by bit, make no mistake, she will die. It is not media trumped-up fearmongering, these are things that were promised by Trump himself AND by the now nearly unchecked congress that's been cockblocking Obama from day one are poised and ready to do their level best to accomplish.
Oh and to those who think that the hate Trump stirred up is overblown, good grief, someone hollered "KILL OBAMA" at Trump's victory speech. Yeah, these sorts of folks are tooootally going to just chill out and be happy go lucky good, honorable citizens that haven't planned celabratory KKK marches, or instigated racial or gay intimidation. All just the media, right?
I'm one of the lucky ones, I know that. But I have friends that aren't so lucky and I worry for them.

Date: 11 Nov 2016 19:54 (UTC)I'm thinking it is time to start getting involved in politics, distasteful as that may be. In 2018 there will be 243 seats in the House of Representatives and 33 seats in the Senate to be filled - we need to help get them filled by the right people.
Writing to your congressmen about any legislation that should or shouldn't be passed doesn't have a lot of effect, but enough letters will make some of them break from their party's stance.
We need to locate and support local charities like food pantries and free clinics that some of our poorer citizens may have to rely on for survival.
If things get as nasty as we fear for minorities, we need decide if we will risk arrest or injury by joining in civil disobedience or peaceful demonstrations.
Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

Date: 11 Nov 2016 20:09 (UTC)The friend with the medical issues was posting some good links about taking action. One was being an escort at Planned Parenthood. I didn't see any volunteer opportunities near me at the moment but I plan to keep an eye on that.
Also, since DC is only a train ride away, if there's an important demonstration going on (there's a MIllion Women March planned in January worth considering), I'd do my best to participate or at least promote if I can't go.
I'm all about the local food pantry - I make sure to donate pet food too since people never think about that. I'm also already looking forward to going to Trader Joe's tomorrow since I had signed up for our adopt-a-family at work. The profile of the family is a single mom of SIX kids and it says she has to go to neighbors and friends to eat sometime since she doesn't have enough. I like to get quality food for donations rather than junk like ramen.
I also want to get some colorful safety pins to wear to indicate support

It won't be all that long before many Trump voters realize that they screwed up because all the promises made most certainly won't come true.
