We had an enterprising kiddo who came to our door asking about snow shoveling. Was a little more than I thought it would be ($70) but google says that's fair. He did the steps, the sidewalk from the house, the sidewalk in front of the house and the area of the driveway behind the cars. Considering that we had probably 8 inches or more with a layer of sleet on top, he did a decent job.
Unfortunately there's still supposed to be some mixed precipitation through the evening but we'll see how it looks in the morning and if it's going to be too heavy, we do have the kid's number. If it's not too bad, we'll clear off the cars, do the sidewalks and salt, salt, salt.
As far as the heat, we're being very cautious and although they said it's ok to turn the heat back on, we're keeping it low at 62F as not to tax the patched pipes too much. Hopefully they can come in the next few days to replace the area of pipe that has worn out. Emily is checking regularly to make sure the expected dripping isn't too much which thankfully (fingers crossed) it's holding with only a small amount of drips.
They didn't close the University for tomorrow at the moment but they put out a statement to allow classes to be remote, cancel ones that can't be remote, and non-essential people to WFH. That will help.
Emily's going to do at least another night in her set up in the dining room which she is sleeping comfortably in.
I'm also glad my ass didn't freeze to the toilet. MAN was it cold in there. It's still somewhat chilly but not too horrible. Also, my baby wipes warmer is coming in clutch until I can be bothered to take a full shower. That won't be until we can turn up the heat.
Been one hell of a time lately. That's for sure. Hope y'all are doing ok and staying warm and dry.

Date: 2026-01-25 11:42 pm (UTC)Snow was such a rarity for us growing up, that shoveling the driveway was kind of a novelty and we all would put some time into it. Still - we'd get bored before it was done, so my parents would have to come out and encourage us to keep at it :D
didn't help that we only had ONE proper snow shovel - the other shovels were all fairly useless, except for the one small one that was good for breaking up ice chunks.
