I tried to keep my babbling during the interview to a minimum but I did get chatty at times. That said, I think I answered their questions well. For the one about why I'd consider a lateral move, my answer was a combination of concerns about the new leadership not getting along with the current leadership (which the person asking the question seemed to hint at so she must know our campus is an absolute infighting dumpster fire right now that I'd rather stay out of their drama) and it affecting the research land-grant program, and the fact that I've been doing the job of an assistant director for 8 years at my current title (3 pay grades lower) with no help. That I have asked about help since previously the position had help (read: me, I was the help) and that although I get compliments about how great I do and how I'm indispensable, requests for elevation of the job are falling on deaf ears. That seemed to make plenty of sense to them. In fact, the person that I'd be reporting to was recently elevated to a managerial position to supervise the position they're filling.
They also seem to have liked my answer to "how would I balance the pressure of quality work with quick work?"
I went with saying that the priority is to make sure something is correct the first time because otherwise it affects everyone, but at the same time, I've never missed a deadline and I don't intend to now.
They mentioned that they had several others to interview and that they'd let me know if I made the next round soon. I do think they're looking to fill it pretty quickly since I know that they're a busy office. Am I concerned about it being a busy office? Pffft, hell no. There are MULTIPLE people in this position - an actual TEAM (I may have gone "YAY!" with little happy hands at that).
The potential manager - who I also know and like - asked about how I take constructive criticism and I say that I take it well. If I'm not doing something correctly, I absolutely want to know so I can fix the problem because any errors that might make would affect the group, the people with the grant, and our relationship with the sponsor.
So we'll see. They mentioned that they're currently doing a three day in, two day from home situation. I nodded and didn't bring up my accommodation quite yet. If they're fine with flextime, they may be fine with my disability arrangement of being in five days but in house in the morning, WFH in the afternoon. But I didn't want to mention it until the possible next round when I'd know I'm being considered more seriously.

wait, this new team has MULTIPLE people who do the SAME job? Like...people who can cover each other when you need to take time off? OMG what a concept???!!!

Date: 18 Jul 2023 13:21 (UTC)I wondered this morning if the interviewer's mention about "leadership" might mean that other people from the business office here applied for that job?
