Wow. This is sad that someone would think that they're "in the right" to be so horrible to a fellow Christian

Bigot’s Note To LGBT-Friendly Minister: ‘God Hates You’ For Marrying ‘Queers’

I know not all Christian people are like that but that note writer certainly doesn't do a great job of loving thy neighbor and not casting stones, doesn't he? While I'll admit that I harbor one heck of a lot of dislike for bigots like that, I wouldn't go so far to say I hate. They're more worthy of pity for not being willing to let others live their lives as they say fit. I mean if their god is the one that is supposed to do the judging rather than them, then aren't they breaking their own religious rules with a note like that?

Just sayin'.

As an actual believer--albeit quite a flawed one lol--I always feel the need to step in apologize for douchenozzles like that one.

Sorry you had to read that garbage. Pisses me off when people take a line from Leviticus and some stuff from Paul and use it to justify their own evil.

That's the whole sad thing about it. You shouldn't have to apologize for that freaky faction of folks. I'm sure NORMAL, respectful Christians certainly don't like being painted with that crazy hate brush any more than Muslims being treated like they're all terrorists.

And yeah, cherry picking bible verses to try to justify hate, even worse. Though I don't know much about the bible, it's always at least mildly amusing to come back to those people asking if they eat shrimp or wear polyester.

Sadly, there are hate-filled idiots even among atheists.

I must be terrible to believe in a deity that will cause an innocent person to suffer a slow and torturous death just to punish another person who loves the first. Not the behavior of a just and merciful god.

Good point. Atheists can troll just as well, sadly.

I wouldn't say terrible. It befuddles me that folks do, though.

The closest affiliation I have to any sort of religion is Jedi. Believing in a vague general connection to others where you're supposed to listen to your instincts to do the right thing seemed to make the most sense to me.

I'm not so good about it, either! I don't know why. I'd rather not read it, maybe because of all those other people who cherry pick and bash others with it.

I do often use the tattoos/pork and seafood/mixed fibers argumnent, though. too funny to watch them bluster and respond with ad hominem attacks when they don't have a real comeback.

See, told you I was flawed :D

I'm still wondering why live and let live isn't given the credit it deserves. If people just stopped trying to tell others how to live their lives and got on with their own, there would be less hate and fewer wars.

Exactly so. As long as the way you live your life is causing no true harm, I don't understand why there are people that feel the need to tell you you're doing it wrong

I know, right? How can you say such awful things and wish such evil on someone that's only trying to spread love?

Poor guy, I feel for him. I hope some of the folks in his community have done something nice for him. If not, he can move here since for its other failings, my community wouldn't treat him like that

What a heartbreakingly cruel thing to do to this man, who was surely grieving.

In the New Testament book of Matthew, Jesus says "Judge not, lest you be judged." (Matthew 7:1-3) He also says (In John: 8-7, referring to the woman caught in adultery) "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

I choose to follow the example of the people of Charleston, SC. I will pray for the man who lost his wife, that he finds peace and solace. And I will pray for the person who sent that letter, that they find compassion and agape within their heart.

I just can't.....the pain in the reverend's post is so palpable. Why would you bring that level of hatred and horribleness on another human?

It's not about religion. It is about decency and simple compassion. Believe whatever fucked up thing you want, but then shut up. Your belief is yours, not everyone's and certainly not a reason to cause this much pain.

Humans suck.

I think people who spread hate and scorn deserve nothing but in return, and people bigger than me can move past without hating this sort of thing, but not me. This stuff fills me with rage.

I do believe the Bible has a number of things to say about people like this.
  • "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." Galatians 6:7

  • "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets." Matthew 7:12*

  • "If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?" 1 John 4:20

  • "He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now." 1 John 2:9

  • All of the above are from the KJV. I'm sure there are just as many, if not more (considering Jesus' ministry) quotes that decry the hatred that so many seem to see justified through the bible. I've read the bible a number of times, and I've never gotten nearly as much justification for hatred and discrimination as other people seem to find. I guess it goes to show you that if you want to be a hateful person bad enough, you can always find some weak tea to back it up.

*It should be noted that I am not trying to use the Golden Rule there to justify hating that guy. While I tend to live by a rule of reciprocity (i.e. if I was that hateful towards others, it would be fully expected that someone felt the same about me), it's pretty clear that the bible is saying to treat others well. After all, who the heck wants to be treated like that person treated the minister?

Hopefully both of your prayers are answered because the man that lost his wife didn't deserve this and the man that wrote it needs to see what kind of evil is blackening his heart

That's what I don't understand. You don't agree with him, fine. You want to tell him you don't AGREE with him, well, rude but I guess you have a need to say it but good GRIEF that letter was so far over the line that it's a speck in the distance.

The freak needs to turn off Faux News and start rethinking his life. He's another Dylann Roof in the making (and every time I see that stupid first name with the extra n, I roll my eyes)

Don't get me wrong, I hate what he said, I'm angry as hell that he said it but although I wouldn't hesitate to slap the crap out of him, I can't go so far as wishing him AIDS and death like he did the minister.

See, you can easily find things in the Bible that tell you NOT to hate. Why, just WHY do people search so hard and twist things to find the tiniest justification for their bigotry and hatred? It's disgusting. It's as bad as the people that go looking for "black on white" crime to justify their racism. What is WRONG with these people? Places like Faux News have soured people on humanity. Liberals are "the enemy" and not seen as real people. I mean WTFFFF?

One religious thing that I hope is real is karma. Because Mr. Hate deserves to have the bile he spilled come spewing back at him.

Holier than thou is not just a phrase for some people. However, they then come back and shriek that we are being intolerant because we won't abide their abuse. Sigh...

    From: [identity profile] msdark.livejournal.com
Oh yeah, no. My "hate" doesn't go as far as wishing bad on others, at least not to that degree. I tend to wish karma on them, though I know full well that if they're putting hate out, then karma would dictate that that's what they get back. I'm usually of the mindset that I don't wish bad things to them, but... should the Earth open up and swallow them whole, I might not think much of it. What he did to the minister was super shitty.

Yep, and that was a five minute search on Google. Imagine what one could do with an actual bible. Jesus was all about the brotherly love; I would argue that there's probably enough mention of love in the gospels to thoroughly rout any previously mentioned hate.

Oh goddess, Faux News. My father is a zombie to that show. I wrote a poem about it actually. I can get pretty venomous about it.
