Dad called to ask me whether we ate at Antoine's on the one time we went to New Orleans (pre-Katrina). We hadn't, but I told him the reason why it was familiar to him is because I have a menu from a place in NO with a similar name - Arnaud's - that I found in an antique shop in Ohio and at the last place I live, I turned scans of it into a wall-long mural. It didn't come down from the wall in good enough shape to transport but I could have it made again sometime. The gallery with the scans of the old menu are here with other vintage menus on my flickr gallery
He asked because there was this piece on CBS Sunday Morning
I wish we would have gone there since they clearly value their people and their customers. Maybe I'll get the chance sometime. For the record, we didn't go to Arnaud's either. I am wondering about the menu and prices for a place ther around the Civil War!
Makes me wonder - any of you have a place like this that you frequent? I do get along well and like to visit my local Ruthie's Bagels regularly. I'm FB friends with the owner even.
(Posted on my LJ in public, if anyone feels like sharing in a comm for more feedback, that would be cool)

The Friday Five
8 January 2016 14:06These questions were written by
versailles_rose.
1. What is your favorite food?
2. What was your favorite food when you were a kid?
3. What is the best tasting, quick to cook meal that you make for yourself?
4. What is your favorite food to order in a restaurant?
5. If you could go anywhere in the world to any restaurant, what would you order for yourself?
1. DIM SUM. DIMMMSUMMMMM
2. Spaghetti with tomato sauce. Though no one ever made it as well as Mom so it became a running joke when I'd order it at a restaurant and they'd try to remind me that I wasn't going t like it
3. Hm...I'd say an omelet. Made properly with the pocket of lovely veggies and cheese inside the pocket of egg (or egg white if I'm being good) and not "diner style" where they cook the stupid contents into the egg. That's not a proper omelet.
4. See #1, though on a more ordinary day, good ol' Chinese food. Usually something like chicken with pea pods in white sauce
5.I need to get to Flushing. For realz. See below.
Oh and what did I have for lunch today? Chinese. LOL We tried a new place that sent out an ad in our work email since they're on Rutgers property. Their salt and pepper fish was ok but I like the place on Easton Ave in Somerset NJ better since on this one, the breading was more obvious whereas the place on Easton you can barely tell that there's any breading - just The bubble tea was lacking, alas.

I NEED DIS
15 June 2015 16:33Oh my...my my my my my. A sushi-burrito hybrid. A sushirito. BEHOLD THE BEAUTY.
Fortunately there's not a place that I know of around here that sells them or Vegetarian Fortnight would be OUT the window. I'd say along with my diet but looking at those, many of them look pretty darned healthy. The rice layer is rather thin looking and they seem to be crammed full of veggies along with the fish. Ooo - I do see a veggie one with eggplant and I DO have that breaded eggplant in the freezer...maybe...hm...

As if I wasn't tortured enough today by not having internet at work, I decided to go for the next food adventure. Here we have the creme de la crap of Chinese cuisine:
Looks harmless enough, right? Well, here's the delish sounding recipe:
( Cut for brown )
Just...bleargh. I gotta really start spreading out these food experiments.

Fish Stick Fun
23 April 2015 19:03I'm easing into the funky food adventure rather than jumping into the EW! right off. Here's the card I started with:

Here we have "Ways with Fish Sticks." Would that be "Wicked Ways"? Uh...yeah, not going to get too naughty when it comes to the little breaded logs of minced fish.
( Cut for fish stickery )

Fuzzy memories
19 April 2015 16:52The other day when I was pondering whether there were any ChiChi restaurants around (there aren't, by the way), I then started thinking about other defunct places we enjoyed - ones that still have a brand presence around. One of those places is the Kahiki. Their frozen items are still around in stores, evidently. I really should go to Stop and Shop and find some. However the food itself isn't what I remember.
I'm almost sure that it was my 21st birthday where I went there since it was the drinks I remember more. It was one of those places with the big fancy tiki-bar kind of concoctions where on some of them they used dry ice for even further effect aside from the fun cups and little paper umbrellas.
The front of the place:

Miss that quirky place. I don't seem to know many of those types of silly places to go eat anymore.
