Just recently, the only grocery store in town, a Stop & Shop (often referred to as the Crap & Shop by Emily and I since we only went there when it was too much trouble to drive a little further). However for some folks that don't drive, it's a huge loss.

Fortunately, one of the local delis has really stepped things up. This is a picture of some of the interior from Yelp

Along the back wall where you can see the top of the white coolers was a wall of drinks that you can get at most carryouts - soda, iced tea, water, some single serve juices and just a few essentials like bigger containers of milk and such (no booze since in NJ, you have to go to licensed liquor stores). Beyond where that guy is standing, there's the deli counter and some baked goods in front of that and a very small open cooler with some deli salads and grabbable things like a few bananas . After that is an area with newspapers that as you know, is rather empty nowadays as papers fail. You can kind of see the start of the couple of rows of shelf-stable snacks and a few groceries and after that there was always some stacked storage where some guy always read a paper for free in the mornings (asshole...)

Aaaaanyway, they made some MAJOR changes and the community is thrilled. Check these out:

The wall of sad looking newspapers is gone and filled with fresh goods and I hear the prices are rather good.

The wall of greeting cards that never seemed to go anywhere is gone and has even MORE groceries. Ooo...I see they might have my Califa coconut milk. Had I known, I would have rolled by on the way home today.

The tiny little open cooler has been replaced by two of them that are much bigger and STUFFED with more fresh goods.

I heard that they're going to try to get more shelf-stable goods too. It's a smart business move on their part but also an awesome thing for the town. People are absolutely thrilled. There's also a teeny tiny Greek market on the other end of town that is moving to a HUGE space closer to the middle of town and will even have places to sit.

The space where the Stop & Shop was isn't big enough for another chain grocery to go in. Maybe an Aldi or a Trader Joe's could fit but it doesn't seem likely that a major retailer will move in there. Hopefully some good will come to that space. People have talked about trying to form a co-op which would fit in town if they could get it off the ground.
