Still haven't moved Mom but Sis called that she's still getting good information from the place we're looking at (older but looks ok and like their good scores for wound management and keeping people active). There was another place she had the feelers out for because the first place we're looking at doesn't have assisted living, just nursing care and Dad is able to get around and feed himself and all that.

However, Sis did ask if they have memory care and they do and Dad absolutely needs this. He called me about half an hour ago and he is not doing well by himself in the apartment. He was almost in tears that he keeps forgetting our names. The people Sis is dealing with at the new potential place are really nice and it's possible that they could be in a room together which would be great. Sis has calls in to the social worker and their doctor so the doctor can especially get the ruling that Dad is in need of memory nursing care.

So still crossing all crossibles.

If the place for your mom also has memory care that may be ideal for them.

Sounds like a memory care unit is what your dad needs if he just needs to have someone keep track of his meds, make sure he gets to the dining room for meals, finds his way back to his room, and doesn't wander away from the home. (A lot of patients decide to walk home, even if they are a few hundred miles away.) They generally make sure the patients have activities that help with memory and emotional issues.

Sounds a bit like your dad's other choice would be an "independent living" unit: housekeeping, laundry, meals in the dining room, social activities, transportation to medical appointments and shopping, and 24 hour on-call medical care for emergencies. They check up on people who miss more than one meal in a row or aren't out and about at all, but otherwise they don't provide any hands-on care like they do in assisted living.

Sounds like things are getting worse quickly. I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this, but at least your sister seems to finally be stepping up.

Random patients do get lost and wander into other people's rooms in homes. Although it could have been an attendant or nurse and your mom just didn't recognize him.

Still keeping my fingers crossed that you get them both settled.
