When I'm watching the weather reports, it always boggles my mind that they're suddenly selling out of tons and tons of shovels. Now salt I can see because it gets used up and car scrapers can be lost easily enough but shovels? It makes me wonder if people throw them away at the end of the season or something.

That and why do people always wait until right before a storm to buy one and seem surprised when they're sold out? Do they really believe that Global Warming has suddenly been turned to 11 and it's not going to snow at all in winter? I don't get people.

But anyway - stay safe out there, folks. Make sure you have your French toast supplies and perhaps the makings for a hot toddy. Priorities, y'know. ;)

Personally I think it's because sensationalist media likes to pretend every snowstorm is going to be the apocalypse, so people go out and buy crap they don't actually need. People here go nuts stocking up on random things every time there's more than a couple inches in the forecast.

Although you may be right about the global warming thing, because I am SO sick and tired of people saying "Whatever happened to 'global warming'?" complete with air quotes every. single. time. it. snows.

Too funny. Another friend also posed this question on FB.

We own 3 shovels and I think at least 2 of them we've bought in the past couple of years. One year we had a heck of a time finding any shovels. Every store was sold out. Shovels break, often, especially when there is wet heavy snow. At least that is what happened with us. We had a long driveway, plus sidewalks, a front porch, and a back porch that we had to shovel every snowfall. No snowblower. They do not make heavy duty shovels anymore. Those plastic ones will bend and break so easily. We now own only metal shovels because of the plastic ones always breaking.

Other reasons, neighbors borrow shovels and don't return them, new homeowners needing them, family has kids who are now old enough to shovel so you get additional so everyone can shovel together. I think though the majority are probably due to old shovels breaking or buying a back up shovel because so much snow is being called for that people are worried their current shovel will break.
