Ancestry DNA actually came in today and it's rather different than FamilyTreeDNA

Scandinavian down from 26% to 1%? It fits better with the tree I'd been doing and on ancestry, evidently either my first cousin or my aunt took the test since I got a DNA match to them. Interestingly, it was listed that they had trace amounts of Caucasus, European Jewish, Asia Central in their trees which I don't have. Makes me wonder about ol' Grandma since Mom thought she was a cheater. Mom got grumpy when I asked if she might consider taking a DNA test to find out more about our matches, though. Bummer

My first cousin on Dad's side said she just sent in her ancestry.com DNA today so soon I may have even more answers - cool!

Well your Great Britainess has stayed at a resilient 10%. I bet your a Norman Anglo Saxon cross with your lot being around Sussex, Suffolk and Norfolk in the 1000 to 1700 period It means you'll get the heavy Germanic anglo-saxons dna representation with the Norman- French.

What about the large change in the Scandinavian percentage? Is that comparable with the sudden appearance of Ireland in this DNA chart?

Though Emily was wondering if I might be Danish since it might be Scandinavian in one chart and Western Europe in the other.

A Western Europe/Scandinavian/central Europe crush with a centre around Denmark is what, in a pre 1000 context, I'd call "English" to be honest. I think it's showing up Anglo-Saxoness.

Certain areas in Ireland have a big Viking influence, Dublin itself it founded by the Vikings as a slave trading port, but it's not a major percentage of Ireland's genetic means by any means I don't think. Irish genetic material is significant amongst the British however, very significant in face and t'other way too. St Patrick himself is almost certainly some sort of Noble Prince from the North of England.

Emily would be stoked if I did have Viking ancestors since she's traced her line wayyyy back to Vikings.

So it seems I'm about as UK as it comes. LOL go me!

OOooooo!!! I connected my FamilyTreeDNA to my geni.com account and it's giving me genetic matches - including one to this guy in the Ukraine!

He would have to be connected to my Mom's line since she's the Eastern European line. Mom won't take any tests but I'm pondering whether to invest in a mtDNA test now. The lack of information on her line is why I took the genetic tests in the first place. Dad's is much better documented

If you've got Fitz in front of a name you HAVE to kind of be Viking because Fitz is a Norman prefix and the Norman are Viking. Norman being a shortening of Norsemen. It's just by the 11th Century these Norsemen have discovered table manners and Christianity and are pretending to be refined by speaking French as their first language.

These DNA results are pretty cool. I may need to start looking into mine.

Do you have an ancestry.com account or a family tree built somewhere already? With ancestry, you really have to pay for a membership (there was a Black Friday sale on a 6 month one) to get the most out of the DNA test. For the FamilyTreeDNA one, you can link it out to geni.com where you can build a tree for free.

Happy New Year!

I don't have an account anywhere. I did a project in high school where I went back 2 generations on both sides so that is all I have. One of my dad's cousins has done a ton of research. She updates everyone by email with her findings so I can get some info from her on that side. I don't think anyone on my mom's side has done anything. Thanks for the info.

If you ever need any help (or info since I currently have that ancestry membership), feel free to ask! I love setting up family trees and investigating stuff. It's like solving little mysteries.

The best bet is to start with a geni.com tree. Another good free resource to create an account on is familysearch.org
https://familysearch.org/#p=home

You can build a tree on there but I don't see anything where you can import DNA or have them tested. But I've also had fun signing up for their indexing where you can help by downloading records and keying in data to save to their servers.
