Along with the usual "lose weight sensibly for the health" and "read more" plans that crop up each year and that some years I try harder than others, another plan I'm hoping to implement for self improvement is "budget better" especially when it comes to groceries. Not just to save money but also to have less food waste. I bring that up because this morning my weekly grocery shop was a pleasant surprise. I needed a few things so that I can make a veggie-stuffed meatloaf inspired by [personal profile] halfmoon_mollie  making one this week. I also wanted to get enough so that I didn't need to try to run out around Christmas to get anything. I wasn't bargain shopping but I think I did a good haul today for a good price. Not going to bother with individual prices but here's what I got for $67:
  • A soft tofu soup kit (comes with a small container of silken tofu and a medium-hot soup base)
  • A nice sized green squash (to use in the soft tofu soup)
  • A couple of small-ish yams since baked sweet potatoes when it's cold sounds good
  • Two containers of white mushrooms (on sale for $3 total if you got two)
  • A hothouse cucumber
  • Kewpie mayo (IYKYK)
  • 1 lb ground turkey (meatloaf ahoy!)
  • Nearly 1lb cod filet
  • 1 doz XL eggs
  • A five pack of Shin light ramen noodles (lower in calories and fat and on sale this week!)
  • Frozen edamame - 1 lb shelled
  • Frozen dumplings - a little over a pound - I like to put them in soup or toss them in peanut sauce
  • Frozen two pack of 8 treasure glutinous rice wrapped in lotus leaves (doing dumplings on Xmas, the frozen ones are in case I don't feel like ordering out)
  • Reusable HMart shopping bag - I didn't need it but I loved the design when I saw Emily's
I think I did pretty good. Just think how I can do even better with planning. Don't sleep on the Asian markets. Produce is typically nice and also cheap and seafood is also generally well priced. The cod was $10.99/lb.

How much are eggs near you? Today at the store a dozen eggs were $7.99! I am agog.

Asian markets have a lot of really good produce, for sure! - unfortunately we don't have any nearby - it's a 45-60 minute drive each way.
